National Women’s Team Defeats Sweden 2-1

Türkiye secured the top spot in its group at the Billie Jean King Cup, the premier international team competition in women's tennis, by defeating Sweden 2-1 following an earlier victory over France.


In the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Group I, held in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, from 8 to 12 April, our national team faced Sweden as today’s opponent.

In the opening singles match of the tie, Ayla Aksu defeated Nellie Taraba Wallberg 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 to give Türkiye a 1-0 lead. In the second singles match, Zeynep Sönmez secured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lisa Zaar, extending Türkiye’s lead to 2-0 against Sweden. In the doubles match, Çağla Büyükakçay and Deniz Dilek were defeated by Lea Nillson and Linea Bajraliu 1-6, 6-3, 10-4. Having previously overcome France, Türkiye claimed a 2-1 victory over Sweden and finished the group stage as group leader. The team will face Hungary tomorrow for a place in the Play-Offs. Hungary placed second in Group C after a 2-1 loss to Belgium and a 3-0 win over Greece.

The tie between the Turkish team and Hungary at SEB Arena in Vilnius will begin at 12:00 p.m. Turkish time and will be streamed live on the official Billie Jean King Cup website.
