Zeynep Sönmez Advances to Second Round at US Open

In the first round of the season's final Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, our national tennis player Zeynep Sönmez defeated home favorite Katie Volynets 2-0 to advance to the second round.

Ranked 81st in the world, Sönmez won the first set 6-3 and the second set 6-4 against her opponent, a qualifier ranked 109th, to secure her first-ever main draw victory at the US Open.

Zeynep will face Marta Kostyuk, the world number 28 Ukrainian player who defeated Katie Boulter. The Sönmez-Kostyuk match will take place on Thursday, August 28, and will be broadcast live on HBO Max.
