Zeynep Sönmez Exits Wimbledon in the Third Round
Our national player Zeynep Sönmez, who made history at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season held in London, the capital of England, exited the tournament in the third round.
Competing in the Wimbledon main draw for the first time, Zeynep Sönmez defeated world No. 52 Jaqueline Cristian in the first round and world No. 32 Xinyu Wang, who had been enjoying a strong grass court season, in the second round, becoming the first Turkish player to reach the third round at Wimbledon. In the third round, Sönmez faced world No. 17 Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The first set of the match went to Alexandrova, 6-3. The second set began with both players holding serve. Our national player then broke to take the lead, but Alexandrova brought it back to level. Zeynep broke again in the final game to push the set into a tie-break. Winning the tie-break, Alexandrova claimed the match with scores of 6-3, 7-6.
