Turkish Tennis Rises with Zeynep Sönmez’s Success
President of the Turkish Tennis Federation (TTF), Şafak Müderrisgil, said that it is a source of pride to witness Turkish tennis rising at one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments through the success of Zeynep Sönmez.
Turkish Tennis Federation (TTF) President Şafak Müderrisgil, who was in London, the capital of England, to follow the Wimbledon Tennis Championships on site, stated that he was very happy and proud that Zeynep Sönmez became the first Turkish player to reach the third round at Wimbledon. Müderrisgil said: “Turkish tennis last came close to such a success at Wimbledon 10 years ago when Marsel İlhan played in the second round. In women’s singles, we have reached this level for the first time. After achieving this success in singles, Zeynep was on court again just two hours later with her partner Polina Kudermetova for the doubles match. By putting on a very strong performance in doubles, she ended the day with two victories and secured her first ever doubles win at a Grand Slam. Yesterday was a day full of firsts and pride for Turkish tennis. Turkish tennis is rising.”
Emphasizing that the national player displayed a confident performance in the tournament, Müderrisgil said: “Zeynep’s performance at Wimbledon so far looks very good, especially with her comebacks and mental resilience. I believe the confidence she gains from this will create even more opportunities for her in the upcoming rounds. I think she will continue to progress steadily.”
“We Are Witnessing Historic Moments for Turkish Tennis”
Drawing attention to the interest shown in Zeynep Sönmez and the importance of the support she received at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, Şafak Müderrisgil shared the following remarks:
“The support from the Turkish community at Wimbledon is immense. The support from those who came to watch Zeynep from both Turkey and across England and Europe is truly valuable. Everyone believes that success suits Zeynep very well, and her ability to manage herself plays a major role in this. Yesterday, we were also very pleased to see videos from many of our clubs showing young athletes watching Zeynep’s match together. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to TRT and the S Sport family for bringing this great success of Zeynep to the screens. Broadcasting these moments and helping tennis enter every home in Türkiye is extremely important for strengthening our tennis culture. Today, every child watching Zeynep thinks, ‘One day, I could be on this big tennis stage too.’ We are truly experiencing historic moments for Turkish tennis. It is a great source of pride to witness these moments and to see our tennis rise on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.”
