Zeynep Sönmez Reaches Second Round at Wimbledon
Competing in the main draw at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, for the first time in her career, national player Zeynep Sönmez has advanced to the second round.
Ranked No. 88 in the world, Sönmez faced world No. 52 Jaqueline Cristian in the first round of the tournament. In a match lasting 1 hour and 49 minutes, Sönmez came back from 5-2 down against the Romanian player to win the first set 7-6 in a tie-break. Starting the second set strongly, Zeynep claimed it 6-3 to advance to the second round. With this victory, Sönmez not only secured her first main-draw win at a Grand Slam tournament but also became the first of our national players to reach the second round in the women’s singles main draw at Wimbledon.
Zeynep will face Xinyu Wang in the second round, who defeated the tournament’s No. 15 seed Karolina Muchova 7-5, 6-2.
